FCC Approves BellSouth LD Bids - Brief Article
The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday endorsed BellSouth's [BLS] bid to offer interLATA long-distance telephone service in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. The company received approval earlier this year to offer the service in Georgia and Louisiana.
Bell companies and other incumbent local carriers must pass a 14-point federal checklist, contained in the 1996 Telecommunications Act, proving their local networks are open to competitors before they can offer long-distance service in their home states.
