Sue WilsonRich in romantic and religious symbolism, the rose provides a fertile central motif for this concept album. Performed by one of England's most alluringly distinctive folk voices, encompassing everything from a 15th-century German carol to a desolately haunting version of the first world war ballad Roses Of Picardy, Tabor's singing is an almost paradoxical blend of grave austerity and smoky sensuality. These twin characteristics are highlighted by the anguished faithless-sweetheart number Deep In Love, and a blissfully tender take on My Luve Is Like A Red Red Rose. Other tracks include two characteristically literate contributions from Les Barker. Longtime collaborators Huw Warren (piano), Mark Emerson (violin, viola) and Richard Bolton (cello) provide sparing, appropriately moody accompaniment, the perfect foil for Tabor's velvety vocal magic.
