California Military Air Station to become shoreline park
Edwards, BeverlyTHE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE PLANS TO CONVERT CRISSY FIELD, a former military air station at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, into a shoreline park. The area will eventually boast a bayside promenade, an expanded beach, restored tidal marsh, trails, bike paths and picnic areas.
* SENATOR BEN NIGHTHORSE CAMPBELL (R-COLORADO) HAS INTRODUCED A BILL that would allow national parks to charge fees for commercial use of parks in films, TV shows, printed material and advertisements.
* SNOWMOBILES AND ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES Es will be banned from 2,700 acres of land recently acquired by Baxter State Park in Maine. Motor vehicle access will be limited.
* AN INCREASE IN THE RACCOON POPULATION is leading to an outbreak of human rabies in Florida. The raccoon rabies virus also is spreading from the Eastern seaboard into Ohio and Indiana.
* THE WORLD MONUMENTS FUND HAS RECOMMENDED THAT SOUTH PASS, WYOMING, which was a major landmark on the Oregon Trail, be given National Historic Landmark designation to preserve it from future development.-BEVERLY EDWARDS
