160-year-old Maine dam dismantled
Edwards, BeverlyTHE FEDERAl ENERGY REGULATORY COMMISSION HAS ORDERED THE DISMANTLING OF THE 160-YEAR-OLD EDWARDS DAM on the Kennebec River in Maine. Removing the dam will free up 17 miles of spawning grounds for striped bass, sturgeon, Atlantic salmon and herring. * AFTER BEING non;Nt.,LNT FOR 20 YEARS, YELLOWSTONE'S GIANT GEYSER has started producing hour-long eruptions, spewing out one million gallons of boiling water to heights of more than 200 feet. * SCIENTISTS STUDYING MOUNT RAINIER have observed changes in the geology beneath the surface that indicate there is a potential earthquake hazard in the southeastern corner of the Washington park. * A NEW CONNETICUT STATE PARK IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON 310 ACRES OF LAND along Long Island Sound. A lone squatter held up development of the park for 23 years. * BOWING TO REQUESTS FROM INDIAN TRIBES, officials at Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park are changing references to "ruins" and "rock art" to "sites," "petroglyphs" and "pictographs."
