HE may bigger than Pavarotti at the moment (metaphorically speaking, of course) but tenor Ian Bostridge is well worth the hype. As his recent appearance on the South Bank Show revealed, Bostridge is in his element when performing lieder, and Schubert's songs provide the perfect musical style for him to show his full vocal capabilities. Schubert excelled at producing wonderful lieder, but it takes the right voice for their artistic worth to be fully realised. Despite his slight build Bostridge has the richness of tone, depth of sonority and crispness of dialect to do justice to songs such as Nachstck and Schfers Klagelied (a poem by Goethe). As a result, this is a record of rare quality.
