Jab doctors held over boy's death
ALAN RIMMERTWO doctors have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after an alleged medical blunder led to the death of a teenager.
Wayne Jowett, 18, died last February after, it is claimed, a powerful cancer drug was injected into his spine instead of into a vein.
Police launched an investigation after an official inquiry was carried out at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, and arrested Dr Feda Mulhem and Dr David Morton.
They were questioned by detectives and released on police bail.
An inquest last April heard that Wayne was in remission from leukaemia but died a month after Vincristine was injected into his spine.
Nottinghamshire coroner Dr Nigel Chapman recorded a verdict of accidental death.
Wayne of Keyworth, Notts, was the 11th person in Britain to die in similar circumstances.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Breeton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said a file was being sent to the Crown Prosecution Service for a decision to be made about a manslaughter charge.
He added: "We can confirm the two doctors involved in the circumstances leading to the death of Wayne Jowett have been arrested by appointment on suspicion of manslaughter."
The official inquiry earlier this year heard the tragic 18-year- old was winning his battle against leukaemia when he went to the hospital for more treatment.
The cancer was in remission, his hair was growing back and he was talking excitedly about returning to work. He told friends it could be his last hospital visit.
Wayne's mother Stella Brackenbury said yesterday: "We have always wanted these doctors to be questioned. We hope lessons can be learned."
The Medical Defence Union, which represents the doctors, refused to comment yesterday.
-A SURGEON has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a woman he operated on.
Urologist Hurais Ramis Syed, 47, is due in court next month after pensioner Gladys Allen, 78, died following surgery at Dewsbury and District Hospital, West Yorkshire, two years ago.
