YOUR GARDEN: DIY IT: HOW TO BUILD A BRICK BBQ
Adrienne WildeTHERE'S nothing worse than catching the waft of a BBQ on a sunny day and not having that essential outdoor oven to cook up your own feast. Before summer gets under way plan to build your own simple brick BBQ.
The first step is to choose the right position - not too close to the washing line, not too far away from the kitchen and not in a windy spot. The second is to
draw a plan of your BBQ and work out how high you require the grill to be - it's usually just above waist height.
For a basic BBQ you simply need two sides. Before digging the footings - which should be at least one foot deep - buy the tray and grill from your local DIY store. Then pour a mix of 1 part cement, 21/ 2 parts sand and 31/2 parts aggregate and tamp down. Allow the foundations to dry before you start laying bricks - the first two courses of which must be below soil level.
When you reach the level at which you need your BBQ tray place two bricks facing inwards to carry this and do the same again for the cooking grill. Build in two inward-facing bricks so you can raise and lower the grill.
