Thousands of Christian youth are expected to swarm Joe Albi Stadium today for the Return2000 revival. Busloads of teenagers are coming from as far as Boise, the Tri-Cities and Calgary.

The event runs from noon to 9 p.m.

The event is free, and all are welcome.

Greek dinner coming up

One can make plans now to attend a celebration of Greek culture at the 65th annual Greek Dinner Festival Sept. 28-30 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington.

Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. each day.

The congregation has been preparing for the event for weeks, starting with a massive shopping list. On the list were 1,500 pounds of beef, 45 cases of green beans, 10 gallons of wine vinegar, 420 pounds of butter, 700 pounds of flour, 30 gallons of honey and 200 pounds of feta cheese, along with many more items.

Pastry sales will be from noon to 8 p.m. each day. There will also be a Greek boutique, Greek music and dancing, and tours of the church. Takeout dinners will be available.

Tickets to the popular event are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the church or at G. Arger Realty Co. at 300 N. Mullan Road, the City Ramp Garage at 430 W. First, and Spartan Cutlery in the NorthTown Mall. For more information call the church office at 328-9310.

Changes in Catholic Mass

Gonzaga University will welcome guest speaker Rev. George Murry, bishop of the Diocese of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, on Monday. His lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the student chapel on the third floor of the Administration Building on campus.

Murry will discuss the most recent edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. The Roman Missal is a book that includes prayers and readings for each Mass.

The General Instruction contains information for priests and bishops about the structure of the Mass.

The new edition, the first update since 1975, includes several changes in the format of the Mass. Information has been added about the role of various types of ministers, the ritual of Mass, and the arrangement of the sanctuary for Mass.

The presentation will include a question-and-answer period. The public is invited to attend the free event.

Visit www.nccbuscc.org/liturgy for more information on the changes.

Opera singer in concert

Opera singer William Harness will perform in concert at 10 a.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1502 W. Eighth.

Harness spent more than 15 years as a professional opera singer, performing with the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Seattle Symphony and the famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti.

He will use drama and testimony in addition to his vocal abilities to present his inspirational message.

The event is free. Child care will be provided.

Lawyers to celebrate Red Mass

The Gonzaga University School of Law will host its annual Red Mass for members of the legal profession at 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, on the western side of the Gonzaga campus. The annual tradition marks the beginning of the academic year.

The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop William Skylstad of the Catholic Diocese of Spokane. Guest speaker will be the Rev. George Murry, bishop of the Diocese of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Program mentioned

The Harvest for Hope program operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane was cited in a story about missionary work in Bolivia in the September issue of the St. Anthony Messenger, a national Catholic magazine.

The program, initiated by Bishop William Skylstad, began in 1996. It partners Washington wheat growers with struggling farmers in Bolivia.

In exchange for the wheat, the Bolivian farmers have started conservation programs such as terracing their fields, digging irrigation ditches and growing seedlings for reforestation projects.

Beyond feeding poor families, the goal of the program is to make the Bolivians self-sufficient by increasing crop yields.

The program also has been the subject of several stories in The Spokesman-Review.
