Dancing in the streets of Bristol
ANDREW BAXTER"DANCING" cars are the stars of Lowlife 2002, which takes place in Bristol tomorrow. The event features "lowriders", cars customised with hydraulic suspension that enables them to be raised and lowered at the flick of a switch.
The fashion dates back to the 1960s when Californian police imposed ride-height restrictions on lowered Chevrolets modified by Hispanic youths.
They responded by transforming their cars using components salvaged from scrapped Dakota planes.
Their activities developed a cult bad-boy following, with 1980s hip hop music as their anthem.
UK interest has soared since last year's inaugural Lowlife show in Brighton - a low-riding Pontiac even featured in a recent commercial.
Manoeuvres include the selfexplanatory "seesaw", and a side-to- side alternative known as the "panic".
A full list of cars at the show - sponsored by PlayStation 2 - has yet to be confirmed but classic American automobiles will compete alongside British models.
