Editor's note

When I became Editor of the Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science more than three years ago, JASIS Editor Don Kraft stuck a glass of wine in my hand and, after his usual greeting, "Publish in JASIS," suggested that the Bulletin should do a readable and approachable issue on data mining. Because much of the data mining literature concerns algorithms and techniques that require considerable mathematical background to appreciate, he felt a general approach would be welcomed. His good idea has been quite a while in execution.

However, Guest Editor Jian Qin has put together such an issue for us, or, more generally, one on the broader topic of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD), which includes data and text mining. As a bonus, many of the articles also deal with KDD applications in our own field. They also stress the human judgment, which is critical to KDD success. I am very grateful to Jian and our five authors for meeting this challenge.

In addition in this issue we carry articles from two of our other ASIS umbrella specialties: archiving electronic documents and our most recently sheltered one, information architecture.

I hope to see many of you in Chicago at the Annual Meeting. If you would like to write for the Bulletin or have suggestions for topics for articles or special issues, your suggestions are always welcome.
