Trials of the lanes
Peter TedescoI have been watching the PBA on TV the last few weeks and the scores have been very low. I've always told my fellow bowlers that if we had to play on the sport condition, we could adapt. The better bowlers know when to change and alternate their ball rotations to accommodate different lane conditions.
In our center the lane mechanic changes the shot every week. You really have to concentrate and roll the ball with moderate speed if you want to score. He says that he likes different conditions every week.
Some nights you start out shooting 470 for the first two games and end up with a 680 for the night. The lanes change very, very quickly. There is a lot of traffic during the afternoons and this changes the oil pattern. The center can run the machine before the leagues, but the management will not allow this. So we have to endure.
But rolling on a tough lane will give you the experience that you need for all sorts of changing conditions. If you win on our conditions, you can be sure you've earned it!
