Drawing Book
Windle, OswaldThree drawing books of original drawings, each entitled Drawing Book, created by Oswald Windle, between 1876 and 1892. Each of the drawing books were manufactured by J.W. & Co., London. The three books have the same illustrated front and back covers; the front covers are illustrated with a still life of artist's materials within a decorative frame, and the back cover is illustrated with a lithograph image of a house within its landscape. Each book is approximately 14 leaves in length, and contains original and copied drawings in pencil, ink, charcoal pencil, and watercolor. Some, but not all, of the drawings are signed and dated between 1876 and 1892. Env. 4 drawing book is 14 leaves in length, and contains drawings in ink, ink and watercolor, pencil, and charcoal pencil. The images include floral, decorative designs, people, and animals. Some of the images are signed "O.W." and others are signed "O. Windle"; others are unsigned. Tissue guard sheets are bound between each leaf. Env. 5 drawing book is 16 leaves in length, and contains drawings in watercolor, pencil, and ink. Included are many images of flowers, watercolor designs and patterns. A very few images of human faces and houses are also included. Most of the drawings are unsigned. Tissue guard sheets are bound between each leaf. Env. 6 drawing book is 14 leaves in length, and contains drawings in ink, pencil, and charcoal pencil. Also included are 5 additional drawings that have been laid in. Most of these images are scenes with buildings, people, and landscape. Most of the drawings are signed "O.W.", some are signed "O. Windle." "Oswald Windle" is stamped twice, in blue ink, on the inside of the front cover. Tissue guard sheets are bound in between each leaf.
