NEAREST the source and actually on the banks of the Thames is the Red Lion at Castle Eaton. An atmospheric Georgian Inn, its large garden sweeps down to the infant river.

The Trout Inn at Tadpole Bridge, which was once kept by a gentleman called A Herring, is a friendly riverside inn which has built a reputation for good cask beer, wines and outstanding food.

At Clifton Hampden is the Barley Mow, an attractive 14th-century thatched inn. Visited on a number of occasions by Oliver Cromwell.

The Perch & Pike is the only remaining pub in the Oxfordshire hamlet of South Stoke. A warm welcome is complemented by the good ale, wine and a mouth-watering menu.

Part of the Greyhound at Whitchurch-on-Thames, used to be the cottage of the local ferryman, where his wife used to brew beer for Just outside the centre of Oxford on the small Osney Island is the traditional Waterman's Arms. This gem is famed locally for its range of scrumptious home-made pies.

Once sited in the red light district of Henley-on-Thames, the traditional Anchor comes from local brewer WH Brakspear, where the beer is brewed just over 200 yards away.

The colourful enclosed garden provides a perfect escape.

The Hinds Head in Bray is reputed to have been the sleeping place for the notorious Vicar of Bray, who changed his faith three times to keep his position.

This historic inn's excellent food includes treacle tart, which is made to a 15th century recipe.

Among the many visitors to The Three Horsehoes at Laleham were Sir Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) and King Edward VII, who used to visit his friend the Earl of Lucan, who resided close by. A popular pub with plenty of atmosphere and excellent hospitality.

Ye Olde Swan at Thames Ditton is where King Henry VIII would stop on his way back to Hampton Court for a quick flagon of ale before going home to the wife. A great place to take someone special.
