Beman's penalty kick is the trick for Indians
JOHN GARDNER THE GAZETTECheyenne Mountain's Brittany Beman placed the ball on the ground for a penalty kick, stared at Rifle goaltender Kadie LaRocque, then zipped a shot into the net.
The goal proved to be the game-winner for Cheyenne Mountain in a 6-0 victory over Rifle in the Class 4A girls' soccer state tournament roundof-32 Tuesday at Cheyenne Mountain.
The Indians (12-2-2), seeded No. 4 in the tournament, host Pueblo Centennial, a 4-1 winner over Northridge at 6 p.m. Friday.
Beman's goal came 18 min-utes into the first half, but it was all Cheyenne Mountain needed as Rifle (8-6-2) managed only four shots.
"I knew what side I was going to, but I thought it was going wide," Beman said.
The penalty kick came after Beman's teammate Karly Findorff was tripped inside the 18-yard box. Beman finished the game with two goals and one assist.
"I did all right," Beman said. "I could have stepped it up a little more."
Findorff built Cheyenne Mountain's lead to 2-0 a few minutes later by scoring on a breakaway. She beat her defender and sent a low roller to the back left post.
"Normally we're a little nervous on breakaways, but I just spotted my defender and she was playing calm and cool," Findorff said.
"So I just placed it in the corner."
Findorff scored again early in the second half, drilling the ball past LaRocque, who hardly made a move on the ball.
"It was pretty awesome," said Findorff, who also finished with two goals and an assist. "We were just trying to stay composed and not get too hyped-up with our lead.Katie Kurtz scored off an assist from Beman.
Kelley Lawson added the other goal for the Indians off an assist from Findorff.
