Conde Nast, Time Inc. Crowd the Winner's Circle - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included

Matthew Schwartz

There were no sweeps, few surprises and one tribute to an industry legend at the 35th annual National Magazine Awards in New York.

All of the industry's group publishing heavyweights took home at least one prize. But it was a banner day for the Conde Nast crew. The New Yorker captured three awards (on an unprecedented 11 nominations) for General Excellence in its circulation category (400,000 to one million), for Public Interest and Fiction. There was a whiff of redemption in the air, since the famed weekly had been shut out of eight nominations in 1999.

The New Yorker's corporate sibling Vanity Fair won trophies for Reporting (on the war in Kosovo) and Photography.

Conde's rivals fared pretty well, too. Hearst's Esquire won for Reviews and Criticism, while Time Inc.'s Sports Illustrated nabbed two "Ellies" for Feature Writing and Profiles.

Business Week Online won for General Excellence in New Media, a category all its own for the dizzying number of dot.coms generated by their print cousins. And yet Internet-focused magazines are hardly segregated from the more traditional National Magazine Award categories. New Economy manifesto Fast Company, for example, won for Design.

Hearst Magazines' John Mack Carter, the former editor in chief of Good Housekeeping and Ladies' Home Journal, was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame by his former McCall's colleague and now "Today" show critic Gene Shalit. Carter's acceptance speech was short and sweet, but he did take the time to admonish the 1,400 luncheon attendees that "life is incredibly too short to do anything boring in a magazine."
