Millions of reasons to dump Wembley

THIS week may see the final go-ahead for the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium.

What an utter travesty. The only half-decent argument for having a national stadium up there in Outer Neasden was that Wembley was a hallowed ground with a worldwide reputation.

But take away the twin towers and it's just a dump off the North Circular that's impossible to get to from the rest of London, let alone the rest of England. More than pounds 100 million has already been wasted. A grotesque pounds 700m is about to be spent.

Think what that kind of money would do for English sport if it were invested in facilities and coaching for young people.

Think of the champions we would create, the fun and fitness which countless children could enjoy.

Then think of the warm glow of self-importance that football officials will enjoy as they sit in their free seats in the new Wembley's royal box.

It won't be wasted money to them.
