Lincoln's Sanctuary
Ron FaucheuxLincoln's Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldier's Home, by Matthew Pinsker, Oxford University Press, 257 pages.
Focuses on the Lincoln family and the small cottage outside Washington they used to escape the gloom of the White House during difficult days of the Civil War. The "sanctuary" was on the grounds of the Soldier's Home, a residence for disabled veterans. The author, a historian who teaches at Dickinson College, describes Lincoln's remarkable growth as a national leader and private man, husband and father.

Lincoln resided at this largely unknown "summer White House" for nearly one fourth of his presidency and for a large portion of 1862, a crucial year in American history. It is a fascinating story.
