Jay Cutler gets chatty - Hard Times

Jim Schmaltz

On Tuesday, February 12, JAY CUTLER sat down with the FLEXonline team for our second-ever Internet chat. For an edge-of-the-seat hour, Iron Jay shared his views on a number of compelling topics, from his controversial finish at the 2001 Olympia to mullet haircuts. Here are some of Jays more scintillating remarks from the chat.

On RONNIE COLEMAN'S comments in the March FLEX: "Ronnie's receiving more negative feedback on his Olympia condition, so he's obviously feeling more heat than I am. I think I gave him a big enough push at the Olympia to force him to train his all-time hardest to be his all-time best at the 2002 Olympia."

On the judges' decision at the 2001 Olympia: "After looking at the photos, I think it could have gone either way [Coleman or Cutler winning], but as far as the judges' scores, yes, I was in position to win the way the votes were tallied." On training his highly regarded midsection: "Hanging leg raises are the key to midsection development, and are obviously the hardest to do, especially when your legs weigh 200 pounds."

On his influences in the sport: "I've always looked at DORIAN [YATES] as a motivational factor in my training. The guy's got a heart like Superman, and was one of the most driven bodybuilders ever. His track record shows his drive."

On almost quitting the sport In 1998: "In 1998, I had a lot of personal and business matters that dragged me from my ultimate goal of being the best in bodybuilding. I thought of quitting, but I stepped back, revised my plan and returned in 1999 and did the Ironman. Ups and downs are part of life, and you must be prepared for every curve that's thrown at you."

On the conflicts involving CRAIG TITUS, KING KAMALI and MELVIN ANTHONY: "I don't think much about it. I graduated high school in 1991."

On whether JOE WEIDER fixed the 2001 Mr. Olympia because Cutler is no longer signed with Welder: "All the talk of the powers of Welder is exactly that, talk. Proof: Ronnie won the Olympia under contract with MET-Rx in 1998."

On Joe Welder: "Joe has given me the opportunity to make a great living in the sport that I love. I credit my many years of success to Joe's personal influence."

On Synthol: "I think Synthol is ridiculous. I think you've seen the peak of guys using this stuff. I think it will die out in the sport."

On other career interests besides bodybuilding: "I would love to pursue acting. I'd like to do commercials more than movies or television. At this time, my main focus is to achieve my place in bodybuilding."

On mullets making a comeback on IFBB stages: "I don't know. I just know I have a mop on my head."

On whether Canadian bean pole JOCELYN PELLETIER will be a threat at the Olympia: "Get out of here."

Yes, folks, there was more--much more--although we fielded some complaints that the chat was too restricted, but you try asking Jay Cutler ludicrous insulting questions and see how far you get.

Look for FLEXonline to do more chats in the future, and perhaps they'll be more freewheeling. But, please, if you have a mullet, keep it to yourself.
