Frito Lay tests resealable zippers on "Super Size" snack bags
Lisa McTigue PierceIn test market since January, Super Size bags of Ruffles, Lays and Doritos brand chips sold in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, offer the added convenience of a resealable zipper, termed the "crunch keeper [TM]."
Lynn Markley in Frito Lay's corporate communications department says, "We added a zipper to these packages as a new way to innovate in our category and to explore ways to keep consumers happy." Colorful graphics on the top front and back (near the zipper) and on the main display panel tout the new resealable feature as a way to keep the snacks fresh tasting longer.
The easy-open resealable bags are similar to snack bags typically produced on a vertical form-fill-seal machine, with a top and bottom seal and a vertical fin-seal in back. The zipper device is applied in strips that are just less than the width of the bag and are positioned beneath the top heat-seal and across the back fin-seal. Consumers are instructed to tear off the top of the bag along a perforation and pull open the top seal--which has been modified to be easier to open than conventional seals--before unzipping the bag to reach the contents.
As of presstime, it was too early to gauge consumer response, but Frito Lay will continue the market test "until we get all our findings," says Markley. She had no comment on whether use of this package would be expanded to other markets or other products.
Although Frito Lay declined to identify the packaging suppliers involved with this project, we can direct you to three companies that sell resealable zipper devices: AMI RecPro, Minigrip/Zip-Pak and Presto Products.
