Worldwide packaging giants Alusuisse Lonza (ALgroup AG) and Viag AG have agreed to merge. Combined, the new organization will be the leading global multi-product packaging supplier of aluminum cans, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, metal and plastic closures, glass containers and flexible packaging with strengths in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, beverage and food markets.

Paper packaging leaders International Paper and Union Camp Corp. have also agreed to merge in a tax-free, stock-for-stock exchange. Company officials expect the integration to save $300 million through a combination of reductions in overhead, process improvements, facility rationalization, purchasing and logistics savings.

AET Films has formed a Specialty Label & Media Business team charged with development and commercialization of a new family of white opaque and clear label films for in-mold, cut-and-stack and pressure-sensitive applications.

ABB Flexible Automation, a supplier of robotic products and systems, plans to establish five regional centers across the U.S. The new regional offices will be located in Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta, Additionally, the firm has entered into an agreement to supply standardized robotic products for integration into the packaging automation systems of SIG Pack Systems AG.

Sonoco Capseals and Tri-Seal Int'l have entered into an agreement in which Tri-Seal will market Sonoco's QuadraSeal, IntegraSafe and DeltaSeal closure lining product lines in North America.

Lumonics Inc. and General Scanning Inc. have merged to create GSI Lumonics Inc., one of the world's leading producers of laser-based advanced manufacturing systems.

Bosch-TL Systems, a manufacturer of packaging and process equipment for the pharmaceutical market, has strengthened its commitment to customer service with a recent $1.4 million additional investment in its inventory of spare parts and size parts.

Schneider Packaging Equipment Co. has expanded its facility in Brewerton, N.Y. The firm now has a total of 52,000 square feet of space dedicated to manufacturing its horizontal, vertical and wraparound case packers, tray packers, palletizers and end-of-line solutions.
