Instant Brit Davis wins Games spot

DAVID MARTIN

MALACHI DAVIS has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympics less than a fortnight after becoming a British citizen.

Davis, from Sacramento, was included in both the 400metres and 4x400m relay squad when the British Olympic Association announced additions to the team today.

Joining the 26-year-old in the relay will be Matt Elias, the Commonwealth 400m hurdles silver medallist who beat Davis in Loughborough on Saturday.

That means there are no places for two former European champions, Du'aine Ladejo and Iwan Thomas.

Davis's first appearance for Britain could be on Sunday in the Norwich Union International meeting at Birmingham.

Ricky Soos has been picked for the 800m, Emeka Udechuku is in the discus while Dwayne Grant and Nick Smith have been added to the 4x100m relay squad.

Also named in the team for Athens is decathlete Dean Macey, who proved his fitness to selectors at Hexham over the weekend with a solid performance in his first competition for three years.

Jo Pavey, a finalist over 5,000m at the last Olympic Games, has been added to the women's 1,500m line-up, giving her a chance to pick which event she feels she is fit for after injury.

Sarah Claxton will run in the 100m hurdles, Shelley Newman, who beat Philippa Roles at Loughborough, joins her in the discus team, and Welsh star Catherine Murphy is added to the 4x400m squad after injury. UK performance director Max Jones, said: "A number of good quality performances took place in the week following the Olympic trials and as a result we have picked additional athletes.

"The squad of 58 is now equivalent to the athletics squad for Sydney when taking into consideration the high IOC and IAAF qualifying standards for the 2004 Games. It is good to see Dean Macey back in the team, which will be positive for all of them. All 58 members can now concentrate on preparing to produce their best for Britain."
