The following stories made up some of the headlines in the January 21, 1991 edition of CWI.
* The telecoms industry was re-evaluating the possibilities of a global intelligent network (the so-called IN), following a lack of international standards; the proliferation of proprietary solutions and uneven deployment timescales.
* Europe's 12 central banks, dissatisfied with the domains on offer, were attempting to set up a pan-European X.400-based network to be used for electronic mail.
* European telecoms planners were attempting to resolve the technical and administrative issues threatening the July start-up date of the pan-European GSM digital cellular telephone network.
