Clean stores, but dirty business - Wal-Mart - Brief Article

When immigration agents swooped into 60 Wal-Mart stores in the USA last October, the raid resulted in the arrests of 250 workers said to be illegal immigrants. Recently, nine of the workers have filed a lawsuit accusing Wal-Mart of racketeering. If the store is found guilty of conspiring with janitorial contractors to cut staffing costs by hiring workers ("illegal" immigrants) who are unable to complain about being deprived of their labour law protections, Wal-Mart can face criminal penalties.

The lawsuit is seeking class-action status for perhaps thousands of immigrants who have been cleaning the stores of the world's largest retailer for years, as well as monetary compensation. The workers, all from Mexico, are currently awaiting deportation hearings.
