Special Operations online

William M Arkin

The resources devoted to special operations on the World Wide Web are extensive mostly because of the devoted efforts of a number of veterans and private individuals who have created their own "shrines to special forces" on the Web. Official sites are less comprehensive. The U.S. Special Operations Command, Joint Special Operations Command, and the Naval Special Warfare Command do not yet have home pages.

The best and most up-to-date of the private home pages is Tom Hunter's U.S. Special Operations home page at http://members.aol.com/tomhun8054/tom.html. It includes a locator, job resource center, guide to special operations books, and links to everything from terrorism and related resources to official and unofficial organizations and weapons. Unofficial home pages exist for Army Special Operations Command (http://users.aol.com/armysofl/ USASOC.html) and Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (http://users.aol.com/armysofl/ CAPOC.html). Other private pages of note are the U.S. Army Special Forces: The Green Berets at http://users. aol.com/armysofl/Menu.html and the Night Stalkers at http: / /www.nightstalkers.com/home.html. Associations devoted to promoting special operations also have a notable Web presence. These include the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (http://www.SpecialOps.org/), Special Operations Council (http://www. geocities.com/CapitolHill/1302/), Combined U.S. Military Ranger Associations (http://www.ranger.org/-ranger/ index.html), Air Commando Association (http://www. earthlink.net/ aircommando1/), UDT-SEAL Association (http://the-south.com/TheTeams/assoc.shtml) and Force Recon Association (http://www.geocities.com/South Beach/1289/index.html).

On the official side, special operations doctrine from Joint Publication 3-05 (Doctrine for Joint Special Operations) to Army field and training manuals can be found at the Joint Electronic Library and the other doctrinal home pages. The Special Warfare Professional Bulletin of the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School is newly online at http://www.usasoc.soc.mil/swcs/dotd/ sw-mag/sw-mag.htm. The Army Foreign Military Studies Office at http://leav-www.army.mil/fmso includes extensive resources on foreign special operations.

WILLIAM M. ARKIN (warkin@igc.apc.org), an Army veteran, author and consultant, wrote The U.S. Military Online: A Directory for Internet Access to the Department of De

fense (Brassey's, 1997), a catalog of U.S. military resources on the World Wide Web. More information on Army-related Web sites will appear in forthcoming issues of ARMY.
