Weekly Price Watch: Intel & AMD CPUs

One would think the Holiday season would provide the impetus to drive CPU sales. On the contrary, the cold weather seems to have brought sluggish activity to only a few mid-range processors, putting spot prices in the same price ranges of the past few weeks.

Both Intel and AMD have not announced any big price cuts for their high end processors. However, Intel's Pentium 4, 3.06 Ghz was up from last month's spot price of $637 to $668. And this week, Pentium 4, 1.5 Ghz seems to be unavailable in retail stores. The lowest spot price was for Pentium 4, 1.3 Ghz down from $135 to $121.

AMD's mid-range processors seem to show minor fluctuations putting spot prices at a few dollars above or below price ranges for the past few weeks. In the high end range, AMD's Throughbred-B Athlon XP 2800+ still seems to have trouble shipping to stores. Prices for Throughbred Athlon XP 2700+ dropped from ($350) the past few weeks to close at $332.
