Weekly Price Watch: Hard Drives

Prices for hard drives seem to have stabilized a bit this week. While most still continue with the downward trend, the fluctuation is only by a few dollars and cents. In the 20-30GB range, the highest spot price was occupied by CMS's 30GB Audio Backup System PC Card External Hard Drive at $285.57 up by a few dollars from last week's price of $283.05. The lowest spot price was occupied by IBM's 20GB EIDE ATA 5.9MM Travelstar at $45 down by almost sixty dollars from the last spot price of $125.

In the 40GB hard drive range almost all products dropped prices by a few dollars. The highest spot price was occupied by CMS's ABSplus 40GB USB 2.0, 7200 RPM at $239.55, down from its last spot price of $241.74. Both Western Digital's Caviar 40GB and Maxtor's Diamond MaxPlus D740X, 40GB were at the same low spot price of $65.

A similar downward trend was evident for the 60GB hard drive range as well. While Western Digital's Retail Pkg 60GB Caviar was still unavailable in stores, IBM's Travelstar 60GB took the unchanged high spot price of $329. The lowest spot price was occupied by Western Digital's 60GB EIDE Ultra ATA-5 at $80.

In the 80GB range it was Western Digital's 80GB 1394/FI Rewire Interface, 7200RPM External Hard Drive that occupied the highest spot price of $178. In the 120GB range, the highest spot price was occupied by both Maxtor's Personal Storage 5000DV 120GB and Western Digital's 120GB External Firewire at $228.
