The Viewmont Vikings appeared the have Tuesday's Class 5A first round game with Hunter in the bag more than once, but the Wolverines wouldn't go away.

Leading by just a point at the half, the Vikings held the Wolverines (12-10) scoreless for the first four minutes of the the third quarter en route to the 64-49 victory.

"In the 9:30 a.m. game you have to keep things close in the first half," Viewmont coach Jeff Emery said. "The kids got the feel of the game and made some adjustments and played looser in the second half."

On four straight points by Cody Hansen the Wolverines trimmed the lead to three points, 46-43, with five minutes left in the game and again at 49-46 with 3:48 left on five points from Craig Morris.

The Vikings took the game over from the foul line by hitting 14- of-16 shot in the final five minutes.

Sophomore Sol Jensen led the Vikings with 13 points and Jeff Sukhan and Brickton Flammer added 12 each, while Dan Davis finished with 11. After trimming the lead to three, the Wolverines managed only two foul shots.

After overcoming an early six-point Hunter lead with an 11-2 run led by three-pointers by Sukhan and Flammer, the Vikings, winners of eight of their last nine games, had trouble putting way Region 3's Hunter, which had won three of its last four games.

Viewmont (16-6) led by four in the second quarter, but Hunter fought back to tie the score at 20-20 on a three-pointer by Otis Nelson and then took another brief lead at 25-24 on a three-pointer by Morris. The second half was a different story.

Jensen led his team with six points in the third quarter as it jumped out to a 12-point lead.

Hunter turned the ball over and missed two shots in its first five possessions of the quarter to allow the Vikings to break the game open.

Hunter made a mini-run at the end of the quarter with two free throws by Cody Hansen and a basket by Otis Nelson to cut the lead to eight.

Nelson led the Wolverines with 12 points and Morris followed with 11.
