8. The Unheard Song
Bell, MarvinHe has taken ether and peyote, but he cannot hear the song.
He has clothed himself in smoke, he has rubbed himself with ashes.
Still the leaves dance to the song at the cap ends of their branches.
He sees this and believes in a song he cannot hear.
Well, I went out to walk on the moon and there it was.
I had to step over the curb and into the street, but there it was.
The moon lay on the pavement where it had landed in the dark.
I was happy in the asylum that is the night outdoors.
I was there for the stratosphere, and for home.
My purpose in life had been to look out the window.
How free I was behind the well-caulked double panes.
Then the moon lit a path in the dark without exposing me.
I brought it the news and laid it down and ground it out with my heel.
I walked all over the moon looking for the famous artifacts.
I stayed outside in the night with nothing else to do.
I knew the spheres were singing on both sides of me.
