Midway USA's Interactive Dueling Post - Brief Article
Clair ReesWhen you tire of shooting paper bullseyes, it's fun to turn to an interactive target that reacts when hit. I recently obtained the .22 rimfire version of the "Dueling Post" from Midway USA. This features four 3 5/8" steel target discs mounted on a sturdy vertical steel arm. The arm is bolted to an H-shaped steel base. Twin holes in the base accommodate steel anchor stakes, which are provided.
This is sturdy equipment. Each target is made of 3/16" thick steel plate welded to a 1/2" steel rod. The rod is in turn welded at right angles to a solid steel post measuring 1" in diameter.
This post is inserted into a steel female receptacle welded to the vertical support. This supporting arm features strong girder-like construction. It's formed by a 29" long section of 1/4" steel bent at right angles.
The upper part of each female receptacle is both angled and beveled to produce a camming effect when the target is struck. With each hit, the target emits a loud "bong" and rotates 180 degrees around the vertical support arm. This presents the reverse side of the disc for the next shot.
The Dueling Post really works. Targets snap from one side to the other with a satisfying clang. Bullet splashes are readily apparent on each disc's blackened surface. Recommended minimum shooting distance is 25 yards.
In addition to the rimfire version I tried, there's also a Dueling Post with 4 1/2" target discs for centerfire handguns. The former sells for $83, while the centerfire model costs $5 more.
