The Topeka Capital-Journal and its newsroom staff collected numerous awards Saturday at the Kansas Press Association's Awards of Excellence competition.
The newspaper, competing in the 25,000 and above circulation group, won first place in the categories of news and writing excellence, sports pages and design, and layout excellence. The awards were presented at KPA's Convention and Trade Show at the Capitol Plaza Hotel.
Four individuals from The Capital-Journal also claimed first- place awards.
Jan Biles won first place in feature writing for her story, "Circle of Warriors," about American Indian veterans of World War II. Former staff writer Jim McLean won first place in the investigative writing category for a story about the salaries of management at Westar Energy.
Photographer Anthony Bush won first place in news photography for a picture of a car stalled in high water. Also taking home a top award was Nick Krug, who won in sports photography for a photo of water skier Jimmy Siemers.
Photographer Earl Richardson won second place in the category of photo package. Second-place awards also went to The Capital-Journal for best front page, and the paper's online edition, CJOnline.com, for best newspaper Web site.
Winning third-place awards were Steve Fry, feature writing; Fry, McLean, Michael Hooper and Chris Moon, news writing; Karen Sipes, editorial writing; Phil Anderson, religion coverage; Ric Anderson, sports writing; Mike Shepherd, photo package; Chris Landsberger, photo illustration; and Bern Ketchum, Alicia Henrikson, Biles, Tomari Quinn and Jeff Davis, feature package. The paper also won third place for general excellence and best use of photos.
Honorable mention awards went to Henrikson, government coverage; Phil Anderson, religion coverage; Pete Goering, column writing; Ric Anderson, sports writing; Ric Anderson, sports feature writing; Richardson, sports photography; Richardson, photo package; Biles, Richardson and Ketchum, feature package; and Wayne Stroot, editorial cartoon. The paper also won honorable mention for special section.
