Cheyenne Mountain gets off to a good start

JONATHAN MOHR

Sitting in the grass, eating free pizza after 18 holes of golf on a beautiful spring day - none of which was spent in school - life was good for the Cheyenne Mountain girl's golf team.

Then the Indians found out they had squeaked by Air Academy, 277- 280 to win the first tournament of the 2003 girl's golf season, and things got even better.

The squad was presented with a gold trophy filled with golf balls and tees, Karen Wanersdorfer, Lesley Simonton and Colby Housman received medals for their top-10 finishes, and coach Pat Wellens' team had won the Marauder Invitational for the first time.

"It's a great way to start the season, it's kind of nice to start at the top," Wellens said.

Three of the nine players who shot 100 or lower Tuesday at Patty Jewett golf course were on her team.

With the weather and spring break, many of the Metro League teams can count the number of practices they've had this season on one hand. But one thing everybody suspected was that Harrison's Cierra Ko would be the girl to catch in the individual race for the Metro League title.

And last year's conference champ did nothing to damage those expectations. She shot a 42 on the front side and a 41 on the back, to win the individual title with an 83, three strokes ahead of Wanersdorfer, who finished second.

"I did OK," Ko said. "I wasn't solid the whole way. I think I can do better, but I'm not too disappointed."
