Indians dominate tennis field

JONATHAN MOHR

Twirling her racket around her index finger like a wild west gunfighter, Lindsay Jinkins cut a swath through the field at the Class 4A, Region 1 tennis tournament, losing one game in two days to advance to next week's state tournament.

However, her result was just one chapter in the success story that was Cheyenne Mountain. The host Indians didn't lose a set in the tournament and finished first in all seven flights (three singles, four doubles) to win the team title by a margin of 84-52 over second- place Colorado Springs Christian School.

"I was really pleased with the girls' play, (the result) was kind of expected, but at the same time we didn't want to put too much pressure on them," Cheyenne Mountain assistant Becky Varnum said Friday. "They looked like state players to me."

Varnum should know. She won the 4A singles title four times (1995- 98) as a player for Cheyenne Mountain, helping her school dominate the sport during the decade.

With Varnum's departure, however, the team titles have been harder to come by. The Indians finished third at state last season, but this year's squad is focused on returning to the top.

"I had a lot of control today, everything was working, much to my satisfaction," said Jinkins, the Indians' No. 1 singles player. "But my goal is probably the team goal, to take state collectively.

"My situation is way up in the air. The competition is really fierce, a couple of points either way will probably decide it."

While Jinkins was slugging away from the baseline, and punishing any ball her opponents left short, several of her teammates were cruising as well.

Christina Cutter didn't lose a game for the Indians at No. 2 singles, while Cayley Wetzig lost only one game in the No. 3 spot.

Justine Rohde and Libby Wilhelm (No. 1), Ashley Blanco and Justine Zielinski (No. 2), Mia Gagner and Aimee Gravette (No. 3), and Anna Rubley and Molly Flaks (No. 4) also all had straight-set victories for Cheyenne Mountain in winning their respective doubles flights.

So now it's on to Pueblo.

"I think I'd be selling our team short if I said I didn't think we could win state, but for now we're going to be happy just to be there," Varnum said. "We do have an advantage (qualifying every player) but every point is going to be important."
