S.C. State to be Transportation Research Center
ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- A multi-million dollar federal grant will help South Carolina State University become this state's transportation research and education center.
The $3.5 million in federal funding announced last month was in the form of a matching grant, which means a total of $7.2 million will be available to establish the center, a school spokeswoman said.
South Carolina State is the only state university to be designated as a transportation research center and one of three historically Black schools. It will be one of 33 institutions nationally to participate in the program.
The center will serve as a sort of think tank for students and professionals studying transportation needs, says Director Clarence Hill.
Earlier this month, the school received a $1.5 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration to coordinate 17 National Summer Transportation Institutes.
