Professional APPOINTMENTS

CHANCELLOR

DR. HENRY D. SHANNON has been named chancellor of St Louis Community College's Forest Park campus. He was previously acting chancellor and president. Shannon's experience includes administrative positions at Saint Louis University and Harris-Stowe College. He earned his bachelor's in elementary education from Harris-Stowe College, and a master's and doctorate in counseling education, both from Washington University.

ACADEMIC

HENRY V. JOHNSON JR. has been named director of the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action at Brown University in Rhode Island. Johnson comes to Brown from the Lifespan hospital network where he was director of affirmative action. Johnson earned a bachelor's in sociology from Boston College.

DR. DELORES A. PARKER has been appointed vice president for academic and student services for the North Carolina Community College System. In 29 years of work in community college education, Parker has served as director of counseling services and most recently as associate director of the Kellogg Foundation in Michigan. She holds a bachelor's in political science and secondary education from Clark Atlanta College, a master's from North Carolina A&T State University and a doctorate in community college administration from North Carolina State University.

ASSOCIATION

DR. CASTELL BRYANT, president of Miami-Dade Community College's North Campus, has been appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush to chair Florida's Equity in Educational Opportunity Task Force, which was established as part of the governor's One Florida Initiative. Bryant earned a bachelor's in library science and business administration and a master's in administration of adult education programs, both from Florida A&M University. She also earned a doctorate in administration of vocational and adult education programs from Nova Southeastern University.

DR. JOHN W. ROBERTS, chairman of the department of African American and African Studies at Ohio State University, has been named deputy chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities by the White House. Roberts has published widely in the fields of literature, folklore and African American studies. He earned a bachelor's in English from Tusculum College, a master's in English from Columbia University and a doctorate in English with a specialization in folklore from Ohio State University.

DR. MARILYN KERN-FOXWORTH has been named president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Kern-Foxworth is a professor at Florida A&M university and the first African American female to hold the position. Kern-Foxworth earned a bachelor's in speech communication from Jackson State University, a master's in mass communication from Florida State University and a doctorate in mass communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

HONOR

DR. MILTON D. SLAUGHTER, research professor of physics at the University of New Orleans, has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society. Election to fellowship is peer recognition for outstanding contributions to the field of physics. Slaughter is cited for "creating effective programs that attract and educate minority and female physics students and involve historically Black colleges and universities in forefront research." He earned a bachelor's and a doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of New Orleans.

DR. H. PATRICK SWYGERT, president of Howard University in Washington, D.C., has been selected by The Washingtonian magazine as one of 17 honored in 1999 as "Washingtonians of the Year." Swygert was chosen because of his leadership in revitalizing the city's historic LeDroit Park community, a neighbor to the university. Swygert earned both his bachelor's and juris doctorate from Howard University.
