APARTHEID CHIEF'S BID TO FLOOD BRITAIN WITH pounds 10bn OF ECSTASY
GRAHAM JOHNSON in Cape Town, South AfricaSOUTH Africa's apartheid government ran a secret operation to flood Britain with Ecstasy to fund Nazi-style research into a germ warfare bug to kill only blacks.
The brains behind the amazing plot was Dr Wouter Basson, who has been dubbed South Africa's own version of Auschwitz doctor Josef Mengele.
It was set up during the last days of apartheid, but was only uncovered after Dr Basson was arrested for allegedly trying to sell 1,000 Ecstasy tablets to undercover police.
He now faces 10 charges including the manufacture of Ecstasy worth pounds 10billion and a tonne of the hypnotic drug Mandrax. He is also accused of instigation to murder, assault and a pounds 6million fraud. Senior scientists have also given details of the drug smuggling plot to Nelson Mandela's Truth and Reconciliation Commission in return for immunity from prosecution.
Consignments of Ecstasy were even smuggled into Britain hidden in the nose cone of a South African Airforce jet.
Other caches were sold to gangsters in South Africa before being shipped into Britain through Amsterdam.
The huge profits were used to fund South Africa's secret chemical and biological warfare operation. A front company called Delta G Scientific was instructed to make the Ecstasy.
One scientist who questioned the decision was told it would be added to tear gas during street riots, as Ecstasy induces a feeling of calm.
But in fact the Ecstasy was smuggled to Britain in nightclubs and pubs through a trafficking ring made up of corrupt South African army, navy, air force and police officers, diplomatic staff and civil servants.
