Modern Mondeo - Launch report: focus C-Max/Mondeo

It would be tempting fate to mess with a winning formula, which is why Ford has opted not to change its well-loved Mondeo too radically--although there are over 2500 new parts used in the 2004 model.

The most significant change though is arguable, the introduction of Ford's 1.8-litre 130PS Duratec SCi direct-injection petrol engine, offered in both Ghia and Ghia X trims from 17,500 [pounds sterling] and 19,700 [pounds sterling] respectively. With significant fuel economy benefits over conventional petrol engines, this powerplant produces 175Nm of torque and offers a fuel consumption of 36.7 to 39.2mpg, depending on tyres.

Ford has made some subtle changes to the outside of the Mondeo including new chrome headlights, larger door mirrors and puddle lamps--integral lights that illuminate the ground around the door area. The tail lamps also have a distinctive metallic look with silvered indicator lenses.

The interior has also been revamped with optional heated and ventilated climate seats, a touchscreen DVD sat nav, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and a new Sony audio system.

The Mondeo has been on sale now for 10 years and since the debut of the latest model in 2000, Ford has sold nearly 200,000 units.

"The C/D family car segment is an incredibly competitive market and Mondeo is a clear favourite," says Paul Thomas, managing director of Ford of Britain. "Over 140 models fall into this segment and overall it accounted for nearly 350,000 UK sales last year alone, with Mondeo taking a 20% share. In that environment I believe the restyled Mondeo's combination of technology, safety, luxury and value for money is great news for customers."
