When Commissioner Roy Romanow raised the issue of changing values underlying medicare, Council of Canadians spokesperson Maude Barlow said people are not changing when underfunding leads them to say, "Give me my money back and I'll take care of my family."

The Council of Canadians, said spokesperson Maude Barlow, wants medicare to finish what it started in the 1960s, but "I think that Medicare is being set up for a fall by certain parties."

The federal government's policies of cuts and restructuring along with its close relationship to drug companies have put the system at risk, Barlow said. She called for a fully-funded, community-based system, including pharmacare, home care, health promotion and community services.
