A true hero - The Fans Speak Out

The article by Douglas Stark, "Wat Misaka: An Asian Basketball Pioneer" [February 2002], was very inspiring. I am a coach in an Asian basketball league for youths ages eight to 15 in San Jose. My team in particular is very competitive and has high aspirations for boys only 11 years old. We are always looking for positive role models, and I was especially touched by Misaka's comments concerning his pride in being able to play at a high level and not so much on being a pioneer. We stress to the boys that it is hard work and dedication that will make your future, not the color of you skin.
