Unique store caters to sisters

A wall of pictures in the small-town shop of Sisters & Co. in Maple Hill cultivates sisterhood, family and the ties that bind generations.

"It contains pictures of my grandmother and her sister, my mom and her sister, me and my three sisters and one brother, and our daughters," said Connie Lewis, owner of Sisters & Co.

Lewis said the store has a mix of old and new items, with a focus on gifts that sisters can give one another.

Sisters & Co. offers a variety of unique items, including salsa in pineapple and peach flavors.

"I put it on baked potatoes," Lewis said. "People have told me they put it on chicken and it tastes great."

Lewis owns a store similar to Sisters in Longmont, Colo., named Possibilities Unlimited. The same types of items are sold there.

Roberta Walker, sister to Lewis, manages the Maple Hill shop, which has three part-time employees --- Lynn Hoobler, Rachel Imthurn and Shirley Oliver.

Sisters & Co. carries antiques, collectibles, candles, jewelry and CDs of '50s and '60s music, with an emphasis on Americana items.

According to Walker, Sisters & Co. has many brands and fragrances of candles, with the most popular being the almond smoothie fragrance and the runner-up being potpourri, a house blend.

Items are priced from $2 to $800.

"The majority of our merchandise sells for under $20, but we do have signed pieces of artwork that are priced at $160," Lewis said.

Having been open for almost one year, Lewis said the business is still in the beginning stages of success.

"We're still starting, and it's taken a long time for people to really know about us, but now that they do, people tell me all the time, 'Oh my gosh, what a darling shop,' " Lewis said.

Sisters & Co. will have a fall open house the first weekend of November to showcase new merchandise.
