Mayetta's birthday bash soon
John Chambers Capital-JournalMAYETTA --- The 12th annual Mayetta Pioneer Day on Oct. 9 will celebrate the town's 118th birthday.
Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the celebration on the town's Main Street.
The celebration is sponsored by Mayetta Pioneer Day Association Inc.
A key event will be the annual parade at 2 p.m. Jim Fitzgerald will serve as the grand marshal. Prizes will be awarded for parade categories at the town bandstand.
Events will get under way at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 5 p.m. They will include a flea market, turtle races, cake or pie walk, silent auction, jalapeno- and Twinkie-eating contests, old time music (bring your lawn chairs), fire truck rides, train rides by Rossville United Methodist Church, food concessions and a pedal tractor pull.
Clean restrooms are provided.

THE SCHEDULE
7 to 10 a.m.: Biscuits and sausage gravy breakfast at Mayetta Methodist Church on Main Street
9 a.m.: Sign-up for all events in front of city hall and opening of the all-day flea market and arts and crafts on Main Street
9:45 a.m.: Turtle races begin for children age 15 and under (bring your own turtle)
10:30 a.m.: Cake or pie walk at 25 cents per walk
11 a.m.: Jalapeno-eating contest (adults only)
11:30 a.m.: Twinkie-eating contest
Noon to 1 p.m.: Dime coin toss for all ages
Noon to 2 p.m.: Old time music performances
2 p.m.: Parade
2:45 p.m.: Awarding of parade prizes at the bandstand
3 p.m.: Pedal tractor pull
4:30 p.m.: Silent auction, and announcement of winners
