Our 17-hour journey over the Rocky Mountains was less arduous than the Mormons' trek 150 years ago. But the stunning scenery we gazed on from the comfort of our Amtrak train was the same.
The 500 miles from Denver to Salt Lake City is one of the great train journeys of North America. As the huge silver train winds its way up to some 12,000ft, wildlife is everywhere. The deer still roam, and so do bears.
Then the descent begins. Down through towns which have changed little since frontier days. And finally into Salt Lake City, home of the Mormon faith.
A visit to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsing is a must. The city is also a sporting paradise. You can go skiing, riding, sledding, bathing in outdoor hot pools and play golf.
The Desert Wind train leaves Salt Lake City around midnight and arrives in Las Vegas at nine the next morning.
Family entertainment is now high on the agenda in Vegas. So is sightseeing.
One of the world's greatest natural wonders, the Grand Canyon, is just a short flight away. And it shouldn't be missed. It'll take your breath away!
