SHELS OUT FOR REVENGE
Matt ThompsonSeething Shelbourne are seeking revenge on Kilmarnock this week for being branded as Euro duds.
The Dublin side are still raging at the way they were written off before their Cup-winners Cup tie at Rugby Park.
They almost pulled off a shock until the Scots claimed the winner in the third minute of injury time to take the first leg 2-1.
Hit-man Mark Rutherford, who nicked the vital Shelbourne away goal, reckons there are more shocks in store at Tolka Park
The former Birmingham and Shrewsbury goal-getter rapped: "The way we were written off before the tie with Kilmarnock was insulting to Irish football.
"All we read and heard was how superior the Scottish Cup-holders were to us.
"It certainly didn't work out that way.
"They got a real shock when I scored - and it was no fluke. I score goals like that regularly in training.
"I can understand their attitude. We are used to being dismissed because Irish teams have not done much in Europe over the years. But the Scottish teams haven't done much either!
"The circumstances in which we lost were also sickening. We felt angry because the referee had no reason to allow the extra time.
"We will create many more chances in Dublin than we did in Scotland. This is the most powerful squad Shelbourne's had and the players are fired up for the challenge because of what happened.
"Playing before a full house will lift us. This will be one of the biggest nights in our history.
"We have given ourselves the chance to get through - and we are confident we will take it."
