Indian Affairs opts for frame relay
RICHMOND HILL, Ont. -- Ascom Timeplex Canada Inc. has installed a frame - relay telecommunications system for the department of Indian and Northern Development (DIAND). The installation is valued at $1.5 million with provisions for the addition of future voice and video services.
The network will support 10 regional offices and two sites in the Ottawa area and will help coordinate the business of the the department across Canada.
Ascom Timeplex replaced DIAND's public X.25 lines with a private frame relay network, providing asynchronous connections to centralized host applications and LAN to LAN connectivity. DIAND's primary reason for installing private lines was to obtain cost reductions.
The Ascom Timeplex products, which include enterprise routers, Link 2+ bandwidth managers and X.25 branch nodal processors, could result in reductions of more than 10 percent in networking charges for the department. In addition, DIAND was looking for a system with growth potential and flexibility.
