WHO'S READING WHAT...
PAUL JOHNSONAS I am about to write an essay on Victor Hugo, I have been reading Graham Robb's excellent life of the French author. And I have also been reading Hugo's novels, Notre Dame de Paris, Les Miserables and Travailleurs de la Mer.
I have also been reading his poetry, and very good it is. Hugo kept secret diaries in which he indicated by a special sign each time he possessed a woman.
The last sign occurs three weeks before he died at the age of 83.
. Paul Johnson's The Vanished Landscape: A 1930s Childhood in the Potteries is published by Weidenfeld (Pounds 16.99).
