BC check-up focus of recent GR efforts

September was a very busy month for the Institute's government relations efforts, as the BC Check-Up, Edition 2000 was released. The report, which was mailed to all members in September, will form the foundation for the ICABC's budget commentary next year, and provide context for the Institute's comments on issues related to the investment climate in the province.

GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION BRIEFED CEO Richard Rees, CA and President Chuck Chandler, FCA flew to Victoria to meet with Minister Ramsey and some of his staff on September 12. The Minister had some questions about the differences between this year's report and last year's Check-Up.

Rees pointed out that the Ministry of Finance's Infoline publication from January 28, 2000 was an influence on this year's BC Check-Up. In that government report, BC Stats compared B.C.'s economy to Alberta, Ontario, and the national average since 1992.

MLAs Ida Chong and Rick Thorpe, from the BC Liberal Party's Economic Committee, met with the Institute on the same day. Rees and Chandler provided an overview of the report and explained the process the ICABC went through to construct the report.

PUBLIC POLICY PROCESS

Richard Rees, CA also spoke to the Vancouver Board of Trade on September 19, 2000, followed by a panel discussion with Gary Powroznik, FCA, market leader, PricewaterhouseCoopers LIP; Dave Park, chief economist, Vancouver Board of Trade; and Grayden Hayward, CA, president of Cerrera Ventures Ltd.

Rees also spoke to a breakfast meeting of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce on September 26.

This fall, the BC government will begin public consultations on the 2001 BC budget. The BC Check-Up will form the basis of our budget recommendations.

On November 18-19, 2000, the second BC Business Summit will take place in Vancouver. As a member organization, the ICABC will be attending and the BC CheckUp will be our major contribution to the Summit process.

MEDIA RELATIONS

The report was released to the media over a three-day period, from September 1416. As Beyond Numbers went to press, the report had garnered media coverage in the following media: BCTV News, Broadcast News, Business in Vancouver, CBC Radio, Fort Nelson News, Nanaimo Daily News, NTV Fort St John, Prince George Citizen, and the Vancouver Sun, which featured the study over three consecutive days.

The Institute's news releases on the BC Check-Up are on the Web at www.bccheckup.com.
