Classic Cousins
GEORGE JACKSONShamrock Rovers maintained their place in the top four of the League of Ireland Premier with a 1-0 win over Derry City at the Brandywell last night.
It was a classic snatch and grab raid by the Dublin side who, despite being outplayed, managed to plunder all three points.
A brilliant piece of skill by Rovers striker Tony Cousins was the difference between two sides who battled against the elements to produce a top class encounter.
Rovers, as they had done throughout the game, had absorbed the Derry pressure before making the breakthrough.
Midfielder Jason Colwell broke from midfield in the 42nd minute and ran at the City defence. He laid the ball off the Cousins who, with his back turned to the City goal, swivelled and hammered an unstoppable left foot 20 yard volley passed goalkeeper Tony O'Dowd into the net.
It was Cousins' 11th goal of the season - and it proved decisive.
