DUBLIN VIGILANTES ATTACK VICE GIRLS

Angry vigilantes have launched a series of violent attacks on prostitutes in Dublin over the festive season.

Police say they believe the attacks were carried out by religious groups who were offended by the city's booming sex trade during the run-up to Christmas.

At least five prostitutes were assaulted in separate incidents and two rent boys were kicked and badly hurt. Some of the victims had to be treated by doctors.

"Religious nuts attacking us is a new and dangerous thing," said a mother- of-three prostitute.

"I personally know a few girls who were beaten up by them last week.

"In five cases, they were approached by two or more people and told to go home and say their prayers. When they refused, they were thumped."

Male prostitutes reported yesterday that two rent boys were punched and kicked by three men who hurled abuse at them.

Police have condemned the violence, but say investigations are being hindered because victims are reluctant to come forward.

"The vigilantes targeted prostitutes and rent boys, the innocent victims of a rotten business. Their attacks will certainly achieve nothing." said a senior detective.

"But victims appear to be afraid to come near us. They think we won't treat their complaints seriously. This is ridiculous. We will do everything in our power to arrest and prosecute the assailants. But we need the injured parties' help to do this."

But his words failed to reassure one vice girl.

"We are all very worried. These vigilantes don't like what we're doing. And on past performance, the cops won't be any help to us," she said.

Police chiefs have pledged a major crackdown on the sex trade in the New Year.

From next week, dozens of officers will raid known brothels and extra street patrols will be assigned to red light districts.

Plain-clothes officers also plan to keep a special watch in the Phoenix Park, the capital's main pick-up point for rent boys.
