Mobile solutions from Alcatel (NYSE:ALA), a communications company, have been selected for the extension of the GSM/GPRS network in the Povolzhie area of Russia by mobile operator SMARTS.

The solutions will enable SMARTS to optimise its current mobile infrastructure and double the network capacity for subscribers in Kazan and Saratov. In addition it will speed the introduction of new mobile broadband services such as MMS, high-speed Internet access and video streaming, and improve the quality of communication.

Evolium GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio access solutions from Alcatel will be provided under the terms of the contract, including the Base Station Sub-system. Alcatel's Evolium Mobile Switching Center will also be provided to extend capacity.

Alcatel said that the deployment will strengthen the position SMARTS holds in the Russian mobile market, while SMARTS claimed that the solutions will allow it to reduce OPEX and optimise CAPEX and will result in a quick return on investment.
