IT'S IAN WHO?

Neal Collins

Dutchmen Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp overshadowed record- seeking Arsenal striker Ian Wright as the Gunners cruised to a 3-1 victory at Southampton.

Wright went into the match needing one more goal to equal Cliff Bastin's club record of 178 but saw Overmars, a pounds 7million summer signing from Ajax, steal the limelight with a tremendous individual strike to give the North London side the lead.

And not to be outdone by his Holland team-mate, Bergkamp responded to Neil Maddison's headed equaliser with two superb strikes.

Leeds' promising start to the season suffered a jolt when they went down 2-0 to Crystal Palace. Italian winger Attilio Lombardo masterminded the Eagles' smash-and-grab victory by setting up the first goal and scoring the other.

Ian Rush made his debut for Newcastle against Aston Villa at St James' Park but John Beresford scored the only goal of the match for the Magpies after 13 minutes.

With Faustino Asprilla absent after failing to make it back in time from midweek international duty, Beresford took over as top scorer with his third of the season.

But victory came at a price for Kenny Dalglish's side with David Batty sent off after raising his hand to Stan Collymore.

Champions Manchester United hit the woodwork three times but failed to get the better of Leicester - the goalles draw left both sides unbeaten. Arsenal, United and Leicester all trail Blackburn on goal difference at the top.
