Rob the pride of Lions
David Williams in Cape TownModest Lions hero Rob Howley last night paid tribute to his Welsh colleague Ieuan Evans for maintaining their unbeaten record in South Africa.
Evans scored the vital try as the Lions won their third successive match - 38-21 against Western Province in Cape Town.
It was a score that owed everything to a magnifent solo run by scrum- half Howley - but after throwing a huge pass for Evans to glide over, Howley insisted: "Thank God Ieuan caught it, otherwise I would have looked a right fool. I had Jerry Guscott on my inside but I chose the other way."
Howley insisted the Lions victory keeps them on course to beat the Springboks when they clash with the world champions over three Tests later this month.
"We wanted to make a statement by winning in Cape Town because this is where we will play the first Test," added Howley. "It was vital we laid a foundation and sent out a message by winning well.
